Major Functions Of Immune System – Blood is a liquid tissue that has three main functions: transporting nutrients, hormones, waste, etc. Regulation of body temperature, pH and water balance Protection against disease and excessive blood loss through clotting.
2 Pathogen Something foreign that enters the body and causes disease eg: virus (AIDS, chicken pox, colds) bacteria (strep throat, E. coli) fungus (athlete’s foot, ringworm) parasite (tapeworm, leech, malaria) toxin (lead) poisoning , carbon monoxide)
Major Functions Of Immune System
3 Immune system The function of the immune system is to detect, attack, destroy and remember all types of pathogens in the body’s defense against disease: bone marrow, WBCs, lymph nodes, tonsils, thymus and spleen.
Covid 19 Infection: The Perspectives On Immune Responses
4 Immunity The ability to fight infection by producing antibodies or phagocytic cells that kill foreign cells. It works because the body can distinguish between self and foreign substances, or “self,” by recognizing cell markers. Lymphocytes (B cells and T cells) recognize foreign antigens and either produce antibodies or kill the foreign cells. Each B or T cell recognizes a different antigen.
5 Antigen is a molecule on the surface of a cell that identifies that particular cell. All cells contain many types of antigens. Antibodies bind to the antigen and help destroy it. Every antigen produced by T and B cells recognizes the antigen.
6 Active Immunity You make your own antibodies when you are exposed to antigens, such as when you get sick or when you get a vaccine. The antigens used are dead or weakened viruses or bacteria. They trigger an immune response without making you sick. Such immunity is permanent.
The Lymphatic System 1: Structure, Function And Oedema
Such immunity is temporary against the blood of another person or animal or in breast milk of your mother during the last month of pregnancy.
8 blood groups All human cells contain antigens; This is how self and self are recognized. There are 4 main blood types that depend on the presence or absence of 2 antigens on a person’s RBCs. You are born with antibodies to antigens that your RBCs do not have.
If you get a type to which you have antibodies, the blood will clot, clog vessels and cause kidney failure. Transplanted organs are also rejected because they contain non-cell antigens and your body makes antibodies against them. This effect can be reduced if the recipient and donor are closely related and if the recipient takes immunosuppressive drugs to slow or stop the body’s immune system.
Sex Differences In Immune Responses
11 Allergies An allergic reaction occurs when your immune system reacts to something it thinks is harmful but isn’t, such as pollen, pet dander, nuts, shellfish or bee stings. This causes special cells to release a substance called histamine that causes sneezing and itchy, watery eyes. A severe allergic reaction can cause airway obstruction and swelling and can lead to death if not treated immediately.

Your immune system is one of your body’s main regulatory systems. When this system is out of balance, it will be virtually impossible to restore your health. Sometimes this system is “weak” and this leads to frequent illnesses and long periods of recovery. But often it is out of balance and does more harm than good to your body!
Cross Tissue Immune Cell Analysis Reveals Tissue Specific Features In Humans
Protection: This means finding and destroying anything that can harm you. These include yeast, bacteria, viruses, parasites and even unhealthy cells produced by your body (such as cancer cells).
Healing: Your immune system is also your body’s most important healing system. When you damage a part of your body, the immune system triggers a series of reactions that remove the damaged tissue and start the healing process. You will see that Level #4 of the Functional Medicine pyramid I created is stress/inflammation. Inflammation is part of the healing process, but when inflammation is out of balance, it does more harm than good.
For example, let’s say you eat food that causes inflammation in your body; This means inflammation and your immune system “fighting” a false enemy. Food itself will not harm you like viruses or parasites; That’s why I call it the “false” enemy; However, the result is the same…inflammation and a burden on your immune system.
Summary Of Function And Measurement Of Three Physiological Systems
You’ll notice that I added stress to inflammation in level #4; Because too much stress will lead to poor immune function and regulation. If you overwork, don’t rest enough, or are under enough stress, you are more likely to get sick and more likely to trigger an inappropriate immune response. Stress can even worsen autoimmune conditions or cause additional autoimmune diseases.
Most of your immune system is located in and around your digestive system; What you will find on level 1 of the pyramid. You can see how the lower levels of the Functional Medicine pyramid must be addressed if you expect your immune system to heal and experience an appropriate immune response. What is appropriate you ask? The immune system only attacks real danger, not your body. When your immune system starts mistaking your own body for the enemy, we call it autoimmunity. One of the most common organs attacked by the immune system is the thyroid gland. This can lead to Grave’s disease or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. The former causes hyperthyroidism and the latter eventually causes hypothyroidism. One of the reasons I placed the thyroid gland at level #6 of the pyramid.
There is not much you can do to try to “heal” your immune system if your digestive system is unhealthy. If your digestive system is not healthy, your ability to detoxify and keep your body and cells clean will not function properly. If your blood sugar is not balanced, it can put stress on your body and cause inflammation. When this happens your immune system is now burdened by all the layers below; So it is either overworked and tired or it starts to ‘make a mistake’ and attack your own body (autoimmunity) or it fails to recognize and destroy unhealthy cells (cancer).
The Immune Response Against Pathogens
Based on the “physio-logical” functional medicine pyramid, you will start with your digestive system (level #1). This will immediately begin to take the stress off your immune system and also ensure that you are getting the nutrients your immune system needs to function properly.
I do not claim that this pyramid is “perfect”, but it provides a very reliable and logical method of restoring your health. This pyramid is based on almost 20 years of clinical experience and thousands of patients I have worked with. The bottom line is that it works if applied correctly.
Your body is a complex web of related systems. An experienced functional medicine doctor understands this. With all the information out there today, it’s easy for people to get confused and unsure of where to start. How can I be healthy? Where do I start? Do I need more bone broth or spinach smoothies? Should I add vitamin K to my vitamin D supplement? Is intermittent fasting the answer to all my problems? My microbiome
Types And Function Of White Blood Cells (wbcs)
I want to make effective medicine simple for you, not complicated. It has always been my belief that a true expert makes complex topics easier to understand, not harder. When I was in school, I had the privilege of having a nuclear physicist as my instructor. I have to admit that I am not very fond of physics, but he certainly understood what a complex subject can be. Why? Because who better to learn “basic” physics than a nuclear physicist! He excelled in physics!
In my next article I will cover the thyroid which I have placed on Level #6 of the FGGP. I hope you found this information valuable. I wish you health, happiness and a better quality of life!

Switchable Assembly And Function Of Antibody Complexes In Vivo Using A Small Molecule
Do your own research, educate yourself and ask lots of questions. When gathering information, you must consider the source. There is no shortage of false, misleading, outdated, profit-driven and downright biased information in healthcare today; Even from the most trusted sources and organizations.
This method of health care is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, mitigate or prevent any disease. Why? The FDA enforces its position that these words may only be used with drugs. Medicines are not used in this method. The immune system is made up of different types of cells and proteins. Each component performs a specific function aimed at detecting and/or reacting to foreign material (bacteria).
The immune system is a wonderful collaboration of cells and proteins that work together to provide defense against infection. These cells and proteins do not form a single organ like the heart
