STEINBERG: There are a number of ways to do a crossword, including the good old graph paper and pencil method, but there’s also some good software that makes it easy to design and complete the puzzles. If you use a Mac like me, I recommend CrossFire, which is a great networking environment and won’t break your $50 budget. CrossFire also works on PCs.
However, it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that only the Windows Crossword Compiler has. For example, Crossword Compiler has more user-friendly functions for searching and editing word lists. Crossword Compiler’s main drawback is its price – it will set you back $169 if you want the full professional package.

A third, more recent version is Keiran King’s free online crossword builder Phil. It looks pretty cool, though I’ll admit I haven’t played it much.

STEINBERG: We’re going to make a new grid for the daily puzzle (15 x 15), but switching to a Sunday-sized grid is just a matter of swapping the “horizontal” and “vertical” 15s. the boxes above are up to 21.
