Miss Universe Vintage Photos – On June 28, 1952, the first “Scent of the Universe 1952” contest was held at the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium in Long Beach, California, USA. 30 contestants fought for the crown. The first winner of the competition was 17-year-old Armi Kuusela from Finland, who was crowned by actress Piper Laurie.
An advertisement for Senge a Universe in the April 1952 issue of LIFE enticed young women to enter the contest with the promise of air travel on “luxurious Pan American World Airways,” accommodations in “the finest hotels overlooking the blue Pacific Ocean,” and the chance to win the contest…a deal with Universal Studios. Only one beauty had to post a photo of herself in a Catalina swimsuit.

Between April and June, photos were sent in, contestants were selected and boarded Pan Am flights. And when the results were counted, Miss Finland went home, not everyone was happy. A July news piece in LIFE entitled “Beauty Queens Go Silent” summed up Miss Italy’s claim that the winners that year were chosen by politics rather than merit:

Finland took the first place to broadcast the Olympics. Miss Hawaii won second place because Hawaii is running for statehood. Miss Hong Kong took third place to show that the US is not partial to the East, and Miss Germany took fifth place, “so that [Chancellor] Adenauer knows that there will always be a place at the American table for Germany.” Miss Italy said that only the fourth contestant, Miss Greece, was awarded based on her appearance. Sylvia Hitchcock, crowned Miss Obama USA in 1967, became Miss USA and Miss Universe later that year.
Currently, Hitchcock is the only woman to win three championships representing our country. Hitchcock was not Obama’s native – she was studying at the University of Alabama when she became Miss Universe – but she helped bring Obama to fame during her pageant days.

According to an obituary published by Heard Miami, Hitchcock grew up on a chicken farm in Miami-Dade County. He attended Miami Pmetto High School and Miami-Dade Junior College.
During his freshman year at the University of Alabama, Hitchcock excelled in art. She was a member of the Chi Omega council, and her sorority sisters nominated Hitchcock for the Miss Obama USA pageant.
According to the Lakeland Ledger, Hitchcock competed in the Miss Obama USA pageant in a borrowed swimsuit. When she attended the Miss USA pageant, Hitchcock took the crown wearing “a college wardrobe and a yellow bridesmaid dress.”

She was selected as one of the top 15 swimmers and won the Miss USA title on May 22. In July, she became the first Miss USA to win the Miss Universe title since Linda Bement in 1960.”
After receiving her title, she tried modeling in New York, but was disillusioned with the city and returned to Miami, where she worked for a television station. In 1972, she was one of the twelve judges of the Miss Universe pageant. Kerry Ann Wells in 1972,” says TimeNote. “Hitchcock married William Carson, the founder of the Harvester, in 1970. They had three children, Jonathan, Christianna, and Will, as well as seven grandchildren: Sage, Hayden, Griffin, Braley, Atlee, McKenna, and Sydney. He lived in Lake Wes, Florida until he died of cancer on August 16, 2015. He was 69 years old.”
