The US government is investigating 510 UFO reports, more than tripling the number on record in 2021. While many were caused by drones or balloons, hundreds remain unaccounted for, according to a report released Thursday.

A 2022 Director of National Intelligence (DNI) report (pdf) states that 247 “anomalous facts” or UAP reports have been filed since June 2021, when it was discovered that he had records of 144 sightings of suspicious aerial objects under review.

In addition, according to reports, another 119 were handed down, which were buried in the old tombs from the past 17 years, leaving the number DX.
Close to 200 of them had “unusual” explanations: they were fish, drones or so-called air disturbances, which include birds, storms and bags in the air.
Another, however, according to the DNI document, was not explained, an undrafted version of the report submitted to the Assembly.

These are the focus of research by the Pentagon, US intelligence agencies and NASA because of concerns that are not alien to space, but the unknown exploration capabilities of rival nations.
“UAP continues to address threats to aviation security and counters possible threats from data collection adversaries,” the report said, citing intelligence gathering.
“Some of these unidentified UAPs appear to have exhibited unusual flight characteristics or performance and require further analysis,” he said.
More Than 350 New Ufo Sightings Added To U.s. Government Records
The report notes that many of the yet-to-be-explained reports could have originated from weather phenomena, malfunctioning sensors, or faulty analysis by humans.
The report comes after years of pressure from Congress, the military and the intelligence community to take what were previously called UFOs, or unidentified flying objects, seriously.

The Pentagon previously called it Unidentified Aerial Phenomena, but now has changed it to Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena, which includes the air, space and maritime regions.

The first reported UFO sighting in modern history happened somewhere on Mount Rainier in 1947. A pilot named Kenneth Arnold saw flying objects that he saw as “sacreds” or “burners” – dark shapes on the snowy face of Mount Washington.
The US Air Force dismissed the encounter as a miracle, but the media flew in on the incident and coined the term “flying saucer” to describe the sight.
Since then, over 100,000 sightings have been reported and cataloged by the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC), an organization founded in 1974 in Washington state. Earlier this month, the Pentagon also informed senators that US Navy pilots are reporting many UFO sightings.
Latest U.s. Defense Intelligence Report On Ufos To Be Made Public Soon
To find out where people see the most UFOs, we calculated the rate of sightings per population in each state from 2010, using data collected by NUFORC.
Vermont tops the list, with five shows per 10,000 people, while Texas ranks with about 0.7 shows per 10,000 people, or per 15,000 people watching.
In general, relations in the northern and western states were more strained. Vermont is followed by Montana, New Hampshire, Alaska and Maine, all considered high latitudes.

Californians have reported the most UFO sightings – nearly 6,000 reported sightings since 2010 – and 60,000 residents have seen fewer.
The most recent sighting in Vermont, on June 11, 2019, describes a group of yellow and orange lights in the sky, spotted after witness dogs started barking at night.
“My best guess is that it’s shaped like a very dense disc with lights on the outside,” the anonymous report said.
What We Know From Decades Of Ufo Government Investigations
Northern states like Vermont and New Hampshire happen to cross the transatlantic flight paths, but many reports clearly state that their views are not similar to airplanes.
“I don’t know much about airplanes, but I’ve seen a fair share in the sky and this one doesn’t look like an airplane, the lights/structure are totally different,” concluded the latest report from Vermont.
Reports are submitted to the NUFORC database through an online form or through a 24-hour hotline operating since the center was established 45 years ago. “SENT AND IGNORED A JOKE REPORT,” the form says.
We Calculated Ufo Sightings Per Capita In Each State
Regardless, there are likely to be incorrect views in the database. “We can never be sure that the report is true and the description of the UFO is authentic,” said Peter Davenport, director of NUFORC.
Davenport relies on specific information to evaluate each report, such as how well the report sounds. Visions from professionals such as pilots and military veterans are trusted, as are reports that contain more detailed documentation, such as wearable evidence.
