The concept of the beautifully decorated outdoor national tree came from Frederick Morris Faker. Faker was a top engineer and was technical reporter for Gerald Electric from 1906 to 1907 and editor of Electric World and Electric Trade from 1915 to 1921.

A 1929 inspection of the tree by the National Christmas Society found that the tree had been severely damaged by the decorating process and the heat and weight of the fire.
