National Tree Christmas Trees – In November 1923, First Lady Grace Coolidge authorized the public schools of the District of Columbia to place a Christmas tree on the Ellipse, south of the White House. Organizers named the tree “National Spruce”. That Christmas night, at 5 p.m., President Calvin Coolidge walked from the hospital to the Ellipse and “closed the poll” to light the Balsam Christmas tree and 48 feet from the observatory with about 3,000 spectators. The tree, donated by Middlebury College, is from the president’s hometown of Vermont.

From 1924 to 1953, live trees were lit around the White House and elsewhere on Christmas Eve. In 1954, the meeting returned to the Ellipse and expanded its focus. Citizens and business groups created the Christmas Campaign for Peace. The small trees now represent the 50 states, five territories and the District of Columbia that make up the Path of Peace. On December 17, 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower lit a tree cut by the people of Michigan.

The harvested trees continued to be used until 1973. The highlight of the season was the National Christmas tree, a Colorado Blue Spruce from York, Pennsylvania, which was planted in the Ellipse on October 20, 1978. The tree is a daily reminder of the holiday spirit. and of course all subsequent presidents have attended since 1923.
