As a native New Yorker with most of my family from Brooklyn, Long Island, and Staten Island, here are some of the most common words and phrases New Yorkers use and what they mean- Really!
I’ve read some lists put together by others from New York slang and idioms, and words like “hella” or “gnarly” shouldn’t sound like New York slang or parlance… Know that you get NY slang, phrases and lingo on this list! I hope some of these NY sentences make you laugh, because I laughed a ton while writing them, and I say them all the time.
Pronounced “Oh-dee”. OD can be used in many ways, be it good, bad or just plain crazy. Doing something is considered too much. Here are some ways to use it:

One of my favorite words, this NY slang word kinda means what you think. You usually agree with what someone else is saying by saying “the truth” or “this is a fact.”

Buggin’ or Trippin’ used, mad? An example is: if you think you are going to sit in the middle seat on a 15-hour flight!
One of my favorite things is New Yorkers, including my family. “Block” means the streets and avenues of New York City. If you were to walk from 10th Street to 20th Street, that would be 10th Street. Catch my move?
When New Yorkers say they’re just a couple, it’s never a couple! This translates to “I’ll be there in 5 minutes” when it’s 30 minutes.

The word “leader” is used mostly among men. Man, instead of saying thank you, you might hear New Yorkers say, thank you, boss, or you got it! (Although the “master” is usually not their boss).
Brick has to be one of my favorite New York slang words! That’s because bricks in NYC last about 6-7 months! Because the non-New Yorkers are a little crazy! So what does it mean when a New Yorker says brick? Brick is usually used in winter to mean that something is very cold. This New York slang word often confuses people.

Can someone hear a bet? In New York, it’s usually not because they’re trying to make a real bet with you. Instead, the word “bet” is usually used by itself, whether, well, let’s or of course.

Did you hear someone yell YERRRR? Greetings from New York among friends! I smile when Facebook shares my memories from years past and my status says “YER”. Earth is also used by millennials. You don’t hear the older generation greeting each other.
