Night Before Christmas Poems – If you’re like me, you start organizing the details before Thanksgiving to make sure December goes off without a hitch. I found myself making shopping lists, sending greeting cards, planning dinner menus, hosting Christmas parties and attending Christmas services. Many of my preparations are based on family traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation. After celebrating many Christmases, I realize how easy it is to get distracted by all the hustle and bustle of our Christmas celebrations.
While it takes some planning and preparation to feed and transport your family from point A to point B, it’s important to take a moment and think about the reason for this season. JESUS. As part of our family tradition, we read the story of Christ’s birth from the Bible, read “The Night Before Christmas” and sing “At Last”. I worry that over time these traditions will become so commonplace that we will do them without feeling that the season affects us.
Night Before Christmas Poems
This year, I choose to find new and intentional ways to think about Christ’s birth so that I don’t allow myself to become complacent. It may be that I need to break with tradition and find new ways to celebrate this special time of year. Starting with the Bible, which is rich in beautiful poetry and has spoken to many hearts over the years, I decided to explore non-traditional Christmas poems that help us pause and reflect on the gift of Jesus Christ. You might want to break with tradition and share these Christmas carols with your family.
Things You Didn’t Know About The Night Before Christmas
While it’s fun to let our imaginations run wild with the story of Santa Claus, Christmas often takes second place to popular images inspired by the poem “The Visit of Saint Nicholas.” Known as The Night Before Christmas, this prose was written by Clement Clarke Moore. He envisioned sending a jolly old elf with a sleigh and eight reindeer to well-behaved children around the world in less than 24 hours. While it’s fun to pretend, I encourage you to share an alternative version of The Night Before Christmas with your family. What a beautiful reminder of the miracle of Christ’s birth in the anapestic tetrameter we all know.
This season is a time to remember what a blessing it is to obey God’s call. Mary served as a vessel to carry God’s unborn child and her example inspires me. The poem below is one of those non-traditional Christmas poems that moved my heart and made me think that even if I don’t understand God’s will, I can still do His will. Here’s a mother’s perspective on what it was like to be Mary, as written by Madeleine L’Engle.
I can only imagine what it would be like to be the mother of Jesus. Joseph also took on many responsibilities and risked his authority by assuming the role of the husband of Mary and Jesus’ earthly father. Although they were said to be guardians of the unborn king, they were not given the traditional pomp and opposition of earthly kings. Rather, their journey as parents began with humility. This poem encourages me to walk humbly when my circumstances seem unfair.
I Spy The Rhymes In ’twas The Night Before Christmas
As mentioned in the above verse and the scriptures, the angels shared the good news of Jesus’ birth. Apparently, they were the first to celebrate the birth of Christ, but soon three wise men came from afar and brought gifts worthy of a king: gold, frankincense and myrrh. This poem, written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, describes these gifts as symbols of the Magi’s recognition of Jesus as King, his priestly role, and his foretelling of His death and resurrection.
Even if they aren’t the traditional Christmas poems you’re used to reading this time of year, I hope these prose examples have made you slow down and think about the treasures available this season. I know I will spend more time thinking about serving as a vessel, walking humbly, confessing Jesus as my King, and trusting in His saving power; Not just during Christmas, but every day.

Originally a simple poem written for children in 1822 by biblical scholar and professor Clement Clarke Moore, “The Night Before Christmas” is the most famous holiday poem in American pop culture. Here are a few things you might not know, including a long-running controversy that calls into question its authorship.
1. After Moore wrote a poem called “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” he read it to his children on Christmas Eve. A friend in upstate New York was so impressed that he sent it (without permission) to the editor of the newspaper that published it the following year.
3. Donner and Blitzen were originally called Dunder and Blixem. Donner was actually a variation of Dunder’s middle name – he was also called Donder.

4. First attributed to Moore in 1837, he did not disclose his authorship until 1844, when he included A Visit from St. Nicholas in a book of poetry.
5. An original poem written and signed by Moore in 1860 for an acquaintance sold for $280,000 in 2006 to a Manhattan CEO, who later read it to guests at a party – in a protective plastic sleeve.
6. The family of Major Henry Livingston Jr., who died in 1828, claimed to be the real author of A Visit from St. Nicholas, but they have no physical proof. Over the decades, the debate has ebbed and flowed—most scholars believe Moore was the author, but some do not—for example, Vassar professor Don Foster wrote a book in 2000 claiming Livingston wrote the Christmas classic.
