One thing to note is that the water in the lake is low in summer. It can be dry near the coast which can make pictures very difficult. When you see the pale pink salt from the top of the drone, it looks amazing!
The photos on this blog are from my visit to Hut Lagoon in September. The timing was perfect as we were able to combine the trip with a visit to see the wildflowers in the region.
The easiest way to get to Hut Lagoon WA is by car. Hut Lagoon is a 5-hour drive from Perth via the Indian Ocean Drive coastal highway. Hutt Lagoon is the closest pink lagoon to Perth. Another pink lake in WA is called “Pink Lake” and is located on an island near Esperance that requires a private flight to reach.
How To See The Pink Lake In Melbourne And How To Get There
The best location in Pink Lake is Geraldton or Kalbarri. Geraldton has the largest choice of accommodation from caravan parks, motels, hotels and serviced apartments. It’s about an hour’s drive north from Geraldton to Pink Lake. It is about 35 minutes drive from Kalbari to Hut Lagoon.
Strawberry pink is due to the presence of hut lagoon algae Dunaliella salina. This algae is a food coloring agent and is used in cosmetics and food supplements.
The color of the pond can be affected by the number of algae blooms, but it is almost always the bright pink you see in the picture.

Be sure to bring plenty of water, your camera, a shower (if you want to shower!), a float, a drone, and anything else you need to capture the beautiful pink hues. I also had my booties on to protect my feet from sharp salt crystals while wading in the lake.
I didn’t go all the way in because it was too salty (and smelled a little Honest!) and we had 5 hours to drive home to Perth. If you decide to go inside, make sure you have a towel to clean yourself up after getting back in the car.
Visiting Hut Lagoon is absolutely free! The parking lot is labeled “Pink Lake Lookout” on Port Gregory Drive and is one of the best vantage points to access the lake. Walk to the left to get away from the small group that has gathered at the Cork parking lot.

There are also a few more places to walk up George Gray Drive to the lake (and we encountered a lot of mud walking along the water’s edge so be careful!).
Other than looking at the pink water and saying “wow” a lot…. Most of our time at the lake was spent exploring some of its different spots, taking pictures and flying the drone.

You can swim in the lagoon hut, although the water is very salty and not experienced. The most pleasant thing. I personally wouldn’t put my head under water – swimming is the best option in my opinion!
