Date: Wednesday December 6, 2017 Subject: Travel to Vietnam Thanks! To:thankyou@fi3m.com Hi Benny, my name is Ollie, I’m 17 years old and I live in London. (Since you have to get emails from people all over the world, I thought I’d give you a little context!) I found

I was looking at your blog a few months ago to learn more about trying to learn Spanish. I thought your ’16 Must-Know Words and Phrases for Any Language’ blog was a very useful list and told myself I would learn those phrases next time I travel abroad. Then I found out I’m going to Vietnam in the summer!! So in the weeks leading up to my big trip, I learned phrases in Vietnamese, and I’m really excited to use all the phrases. I loved learning phrases so much that the day before my trip I bought a phrasebook for five people. When we were on the plane, our TV didn’t work, so I made up new sentences and learned the original inside, so I traveled for hours. We finally arrived and my first words were a soft ‘cam ern’ to the terrifyingly creepy passport man. It also gave me a kick and left me wanting more. After we arrived and deposited our luggage, I entered the chaos of Hanoi and asked, ‘How much is this?’ And I learned to say all the numbers in Vietnamese, so I confidently asked a shopkeeper the question, and she answered what I could see. . Sounds silly to me! Then she spoke in English, I felt like a fool, but I’m ready to try! I am happy to say that it was better than that. We went to Halong Bay, where I practiced Vietnamese with our tour guide, he spoke very good English, so he helped me a lot, I was very impressed and shocked that I tried to learn a Vietnamese language. I then spoke to a woman on the boat, which was a challenge but I was able to communicate a bit. She was surprised again! My best experience was with two guys in Phong Na Ke Bang National Park, when we were queuing for a boat ride, I asked two guys what they were talking about.
