Mack Rutherford left Sofia, Bulgaria on March 23 this year for Italy and Greece before sailing to Asia, Africa, America and two oceans.
The teenager made his first return to England on Monday, landing at London’s Biggin Hill Airport after a weekend visit to Scotland.
The young British-Belgian is on the final leg of his trip to Sofia, where his main sponsor has been confirmed, and is expected to arrive on August 24.

He hopes to break the Guinness World Record as the youngest person to fly around the world in a small plane, now owned by Englishman Travis Ludlow, who accomplished the feat in 18 years and 150 days.
But the journey was not without its challenges, including sandstorms in Sudan, extreme heat in Dubai, airport closures in India and a host of technical issues.
“I think it was the hairiest flight moment in the Pacific,” said Rutherford. “After 10 hours I reached this small island, it was getting dark so I left and the clouds were quite low, it was raining, it was quite dark, there were no lights on the road.

“The truth is, it’s an uninhabited island, so if something goes wrong, I’ll be living alone, on this island, it’s very important that nothing happens. I stayed there and had to sleep in a small cabin by the road as it had been completely abandoned for over 10 years.
The encounter happened while he was flying 11 hours over the Bering Sea, in the North Pacific, from Japan to Alaska.
It was inspired by his sister Sara, who in January this year became the youngest woman in the world to fly at the age of 19.

The young man wanted to be a pilot from the age of three and obtained his pilot’s license in September 2020, at the age of 15. His father, Sam, is a professional airline pilot, and his mother, Beatrice, is a private pilot.
Reflecting on the journey, Rutherford said: “It’s been a long journey but it’s coming to an end now, it’s amazing. I’ve traveled all over the world and places I’ve never been before, and with this trip I’m also trying to show that young people can make a difference, you don’t have to be 18 to do something special – just follow your dreams and they will come true. .
The aircraft is specially prepared for a long flight and is on loan to Rutherford from its main sponsor, ICDSoft. The only thing more terrifying than being thousands of feet above the ground in a giant steel pipe is piloting it and knowing that many or hundreds of people have lost their lives. ATC (air traffic control) diverted my flight to runway 35 (north) at GFK but cleared the same flight to take off at runway 26 (west). These roads intersect; we almost collided at 500 AGL (above ground). The other plane was so close that I could see the pilot’s face.
Airbus 320 pilot here. Flying into a high altitude city in Asia and 23,000 feet below resulted in a COMPLETE loss of power. All screens, including instruments and emergency lights, went out. To put this into perspective, Airbus has designed this aircraft with three electric motors in addition to the electricity provided by the batteries and an emergency engine. It is designed to never lose power, even when all engines fail, fuel runs out and auxiliary power fails. It’s a scenario pilots don’t learn because it should never happen.

After our screens were partially repaired, there were 12 more alerts related to various systems on board. We arrived safely. Passengers noticed nothing but the lights in the cabin went out for a moment.

I flew in the clouds for a good 1.5 hours and there was no turbulence most of the time. I was clearly in control of the plane, and the changes in pitch and speed were quite severe. I remember thinking, “Oh shit… that’s NOT good!” but from there I just soaked up what was happening on the plane and did what was necessary to deal with the situation. By the time I got out of the weather I had lost over 1000 feet so it was quite challenging due to the traffic.
I have one brand of engine and some time on two pistons. Grandpa was a pilot and owned a twin Piper Aerostar, but he was big enough to hire pilots to fly as needed. One of his pilot friends told him it would be a good idea to fly the Aerostar, and my grandfather asked me to meet his friend at the airport and let him board the plane for 30 minutes or more to remind the machine.
