Spooky Books Halloween Craft – There are many guides for Halloween spell books inspired by Harry Potter. But I’ve been wanting to make my own version for a long time. It wasn’t until I found some old yearbooks while thrifting that the idea took hold. Their textured leather covers and embossed patterns really seemed destined to be a book of spells or even steampunk books for Halloween decorations!
While plain hardback books are a great starting point for vintage spell books, you need to take extra steps to make them look old, textured, and maybe even a little creepy.

Not getting the annuity? Old encyclopedias, atlases and other reference books of large size and texture are also suitable!
Easy Paper Halloween Crafts For Kids Of All Ages
My revised book idea for a Halloween spell book required a few other embellishments. I took inspiration from the Harry Potter movies and the Hogwarts library.
I also collected a variety of paints, brushes, gilding wax, glue, metal parts (such as hinges, handles, and clock parts) and leather scraps. This is a fun multimedia project, so use whatever you can put together or already have on hand!

I started with a deep red annuity. I loved the red color but wanted a more peachy look.
First, I covered the edges of the pages with masking tape before brushing on the blackest latex paint. While the paint was still wet, I blotted it repeatedly with a folded paper towel.
Then I rubbed some Antique Gold Wax on the various pieces of hardware and glued them to the lid. I also use the same gold embossing wax for the shield shape.

It remained only to hide the name of the yearbook and the year of issue. For this, I used leftover brass ornaments from this Christmas project and flattened metal buttons left over from this jewelry project.
To finish, I removed the masking tape from the pages and applied metallic craft paint with a brush to lighten the edges with a fiery copper hue.
The texture of this particular old book reminded me of lizard skin, so I brushed on some green paint (leftovers from this cabinet remodel). However, instead of blotting the paint, I wiped some of the paint off with a folded paper towel.

This left most of the green, but removed enough of the original brown to show through. This gave the old spellbook a nice “reptile skin” effect!
I then painted the letters on the stickers with gold spray paint and then glued everything using the original picture as a guide.
And like the vintage spell book I made before, I painted the edges of this Halloween spell book gold.
Creepy Craft Ideas For A Social Distanced Halloween
I collected all the mechanisms I could find, as well as some old keys. To hide the yearbook name, I used a strip of leather scrap (under the keys).
After I glued on the scrapbooking papers, I painted the entire book with medium gray craft paint.
I then glued the gears and keys on, then repainted the letters and page edges with silver and gold craft paint.
In A Spooky Haunted House
I love it. I think I need to make more steampunk books, do you?
They were incredibly fun to make. And they’re really perfect for both Harry Potter crafts and Halloween book decorations.
This project is also perfect for making a Halloween piece. Gather your friends and ask them to bring all kinds of crafts so you can trade and share them. So you can create your own Halloween spellbook in your own style.

And if you, like me, want to make them, not buy them, I did what any normal person would do – google it, make a short book. The first video I saw showed someone making a small book by folding a regular piece of paper and tearing each piece in half until the desired page size was reached. I thought to myself, why is this man tearing the pages, why doesn’t he cut the pages? Then I realized I needed to make the pages look like old paper, which is what I wanted. Here is the process that I followed.
Paper Plate Halloween Crafts
Because of what I do with paper, there is a lot of recycled paper available, so I used some pieces I had printed out at home to make templates I was testing. This is the inscription you see on the paper.
Finally, I tore the paper down to the size of the two small books shown below. These pages are approximately (approximately because their edges are torn) approximately 1.5 inches long and 1 inch wide. I played with paper strips to make two different sized books that would fit on my small pharmacy shelves.
I soaked my pages in tea bag mix and even added hickory nuts I found in the backyard. Then, to give them an even more aged finish, I dried the pages in a hot oven, off of course. They become graceful and wrinkled during the drying process.

Use some cardboard to crush the pages and hold the clips in place without damaging the pages. Pages will be beautiful and pressed for pasting.
Put a dab of hot glue along the spine and smooth it down with another piece of cardboard to keep the hot glue from clumping. In the photo above, you can see that each book has glue along its spine.
You don’t want the edge of the book cover to extend too far past the edge of the page. If you’re experiencing page breaking issues, you might want to take a look. So make the cover a little bigger than the pages of the book, no more than ⅛ inch.
Easy Halloween Crafts And Activities For 3 Year Olds
I have some embossed Halloween cards left over from last year. The cards fit snugly around the book. Basically, you can fold the cardboard and cut it to size, then finish the edges.
Using cardboard is a bit tricky. First, decide on the size of the front cover. Draw a line, score and fold.
Check if the lid fits before hot glueing. Make sure the cover isn’t too large for your miniature Halloween book.
Making Stacked Books Decor For Halloween
I covered this little book with web-embossed paper before gluing the pages. And yes, I’m dirty. I might have to bleach my hands before work tomorrow.
Here are some examples of scary items you can use to line your drugstore shelves in addition to little books:
First of all, this Halloween house needs a more creative name. Then I need to make the base for the house.
Cheap Halloween Crafts That Double As Spooky Decorations
The ghost in the attic needs to be coated with collage to make it more durable and to keep it in better condition. It also needs a chain to rattle it. What do you think of a bat hanging from the ceiling in the attic? Oh, and the shingles on the back of the roof.
And lastly, all Halloween elements must be affixed. I really like the fact that the books open, but they just need to be glued so that the house is a decorative element and not something to play with. If they are not glued in place they will easily fall over and get lost.
Now that I know how to make these books, I will make many, many more. I’m participating in a mini-album maker contest. The rules state that your application must be a complete work, ie a complete book. So while my project is not done, my books are done. I hope it matters. There is some really cool stuff on his blog, be sure to check it out. My revamped books for Halloween are one of the most popular projects this time of year, so I’m back with a new and improved version of the tutorial. And I don’t even forget to do it once before Halloween!
