Spring Break Road Trips – In my senior year of college, three of my friends and I went on a huge road trip. While everyone else went “south” to Florida for spring break, we Florida college kids decided to head north to Tennessee.
We saw snow. We toured Graceland. We broke up in Alabama. We visited the Civil War Museum. We had a great time in Nashville. We saw mountains. We sang in bars. We visited graduate schools. We drove across the Mississippi River into Arkansas – to see 89 cent gas (I saw it!)
Spring Break Road Trips
I’m a history nerd. I loved being at Elvis Presley’s house and seeing all his amazing clothes and the famous “jungle room”. I loved peeking into the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville and seeing a lot of country music artists. I loved stopping at random historical markers on the side of the road and learning about Civil War parades, early English settlers, or inventions created.

This – the idea of things happening – is where geography and history meet. The history of the place. Geography of the past.
These inspire the big idea questions that we social studies teachers like to ask. Many of the questions about the history of great ideas are really about geography.
So my spring break this year won’t be as epic. We went to Orlando with the kids to do theme parks for a few days and then go home to relax.
Road Trip: Eight Underrated Cities To Visit Over Spring Break
I don’t know what your spring break looks like. You might be on your way to an epic adventure. Maybe stay home and rest.
But in any case, I invite you to think about how history and geography come together. And I have some great tech tools to help with that.
Real history is learned by godfathers – even on vacation. I invite you to learn something about geography over spring break – whether you’re traveling or staying at home.

And help your children learn about the history of their place. They may or may not have a smartphone, but they know people who do. They can go to the library and use the computers. See if they can learn something over spring break — without giving them boring homework.
Have a nice holiday! I hope it’s relaxing and rejuvenating. And (at least a little) educational. I plan to locate the marker in Orlando, where Orlando’s first settler, Aaron Jernigan, built his home. Because…..well……history. And geography.
