That’s why we decided to survey over 900 newlyweds about their first wedding dance songs. We looked at trends over time, breakdown by generation and more. So whether you want to avoid wedding playlists or song lists because they’re too popular for your flower-crown wedding and heavy beard, read on.

6.4% of couples take their first dance to this old classic, which was released in 1965 and has permeated pop culture ever since—it was even featured in the iconic mud-slinging scene in Ghost.

However, some traditions can stand the test of time. Many traditional weddings include a dance between the bride and her father and the groom and his mother, or some other combination of the two, for generations. However, our research found that over several decades, nearly half of weddings included neither a bride-to-be dance nor a mother-to-be groom dance, from 58% in the 1960s to 43% in the last decade.
