Audre Lorde was a Caribbean-American author and activist. She was really active in the field of civil rights. against war. and female movements (Kulii). In her essay. her family is on vacation in the Nation’s Capitol of Washington D. c. Washington is known to be the topographical point of American influence in the cause of freedom for our country. This is a topographical point that greatly expresses and signifies our freedom. Her family was here on vacation because her sister was not allowed on a school trip to Washington. In an essay. In the last paragraph of the essay she explains. “The waiter was white.” and the counter was white. and the popsicle I didn’t eat in Washington…” then she came to the sad world of her lack of freedom in her state. where being white was the only thing that mattered to most people (Lord 239). The use of the word white in this passage is a use of verbal sarcasm. because he understands how much he is in the bay in this universe that is completely run by white people and their way of life on the cob. Lorde’s character knew that the capital of the United States represented freedom. autonomy. and equality; therefore, she believed that racial favoritism would not occur in that place. However. Washington DC was part of the southern territories. 1. favored slavery after the Civil War. so racism was even stronger in that place. The author’s continued use of the word “white” to describe people. topographic points. and things in Washington don’t just convey the city’s racial outlook and climate. but by Lorde’s choler to her country’s capital.
As I read more about this statement. I was impressed with every little thing that Lorde was marketing to her audience. It was almost as if this narrative existed. Although it is not a true story. this statement was based on a picture of what the little old woman will experience when she appears in that clip. The writer uses what is most likely to be experienced as if it were there. but Lorde was not the angry little man sitting in the all-white cafe. trying to identify why this city was the capital of her country.

In an excerpt from the true story entitled “Fourth of July” about a trip to Washington, DC, addressed to people blind to racism, Audre Lorde moves from a little anger because her parents avoiding racism to the point of actually worrying about that racism. it still exists and is a “new and disruptive reality” because it strongly urges people not to ignore the pervasive problems but to face them and solve them.
Lorde angers her parents because they always try to hide their racism to convince others not to behave like this because, as the saying goes, there is no victory any of this behavior at all. The disturbing and polysyndeton image of “two chickens…brown bread and butter and green pepper and carrot sticks” (paragraph 4) shows that her parents are overcompensating by trying hard to hate- hide race from their children. By preparing this meal, her parents hope to distract Lorde and her sister from racism; Lorde also creates images of all these foods to have the same effect on the reader. With this deceptive and cunning act, it is revealed that the parents are obviously trying to hide something. Indirectly, this act of hiding racism has the opposite effect: Lorde and the reader understand that parents go to great lengths to hide racism. Because they are trying, this feed actually contradicts the rest of the piece which is about racism to emphasize that people are trying to hide things that are not positive ; however, this is considered useless as the problem still exists. All in all, these disturbing facts clearly cause racism to still exist because of parents’ efforts to cover it up. Although this food works as a powerful way to cover discrimination, the repetition of “private” in paragraph 6 represents that parents and authority figures in Lorde’s life will always try to hate -hiding race by talking about it “in private”. . Because of these actions, Lorde gets really frustrated because she just doesn’t understand why her parents act like it’s a secret when it’s so obvious. Everything that is private, she believes, especially when her parents or authority figures explain the issues of racism to children silently, is pointless because it will not be resolved.
