As the nation’s crime rate rises, the streets of Manhattan are shut down and turned into futuristic prisons. The president’s plane crashed into the city. The best filmmakers do this better than most, but examples aren’t just second to none: consider the original James Cameron.

Both films have a memorable conceptual clarity, simplicity and direction that drives the action and allows the audience to nail what to expect. It also helps to have titles that explain the concept perfectly;

After the movie jumps into the present, you quickly become stuck in a mysterious fantasy. Caulder spends a lot of time explaining the various systems and rules of magic to support the various characters, but it mostly feels like fiobbledygook and rarely adds useful information. “Max is a 14th-level wizard” is an actual line of dialogue in the movie, but there’s no one there to help the audience know something they need to understand; There is no other reference to the Warlock leveling system or what level 14 versus level 5 or level 42 means.

He also acknowledges how heavily this type of writing relies on mystical technobabble. After a singularly impenetrable interaction with another magical figure who has a “mulder spell,” Caulder’s assistant, 37th Dolan, who, as yet another superfluous word, is just a word for a phantom sidekick—he nonchalantly asks, “I mean everything. Got the point.” At least someone is asking the question.

Max spends a little time explaining the specific social norms and personal emotions of the desert he inhabits. He’s just doing his business and we, the audience, need to know what he’s doing. The concept of driving is action; The dialogue does not need extended notes.

They often seem more interested in exploring and explaining the world they’ve created than what we’ve come to see in some real witch hunt. The film opens when Caulder’s former assistant, 36th Dolan (Michael Caine, who is too good for the part), is killed.
