The film stars Vin Diesel as Caulder, an immortal villain who has waged a war between humans and witches for eight hundred years at the beck and call of a group of darkness that is an ax and a cross. But after the opening scene, in which Caulder—an elaborately bearded and macho furry-armed, Brooklyn minister who joins the Night’s Watch—leads a band of old warriors into a witch’s bed to slay the witch queen, there’s little mistaking what’s true. witch hunt

After a short introductory sequence, the film jumps to the present, where Kaulder, now cut off from the world as an immortal who favors the smartest coat in town and a black ball with a ridiculously faded necklace, spends his days hunting down the wizards who led him. . and he sends them to an organization called the Synod of Witches, which judges them, and then locks them in an underground vault.

But it is more like a witch-detective or, at worst, a witch-parole, identifying and dutifully checking the witches under their care to obey the law, and then including them through the courts. As a nor

Caulder acknowledges this sad reality in a quiet moment of reflection near the end of the second act, sighing wisely to his colleague: “Let’s no longer exterminate witches. Let’s imprison them.”

It’s a bummer, because a movie like this needs more witch hunting and witch destruction.

Never a big fan, but that’s nothing to worry about. The underlying problem is that the concept itself does not understand the inherent appeal.

It is a reasonably expensive film, but still far less expensive than the average studio tentpole release. At its heart, it’s really just a kind of B-movie, with smaller, simpler ambitions than most production-driven summer blockbusters. But what almost always separates the best films of this genre from the lowly returns of the junk genre is a clear, compelling concept – and the ability to understand the appeal of that concept and then deliver on it.

There are few better examples of this than director John Carpenter’s classics from the 1980s –

Boasting an elaborate production design and many practical special effects, it was made for only $6 million.

As the nation’s crime rate rises, the streets of Manhattan are shut down and turned into futuristic prisons. The president’s plane crashed into the city. And the villainous, convicted snake charmer Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell, who was Vin Diesel in the 1980s) is sent to retrieve him. You have no time for extraneous things. Plissken seems to have a backstory – people say he’s dead – but it’s never explained because it doesn’t need to be. He enters New York, searches for the president, then tries to get out. That’s all.

The best filmmakers do this better than most, but examples aren’t just second to none: consider the original James Cameron.

Both films have a memorable conceptual clarity, simplicity and direction that drives the action and allows the audience to nail what to expect. It also helps to have titles that explain the concept perfectly;

It’s a terrible movie because it has no idea what it’s about. Reason is the end of the concept. But they don’t know what to do – and don’t know why it’s important in the first place.

After the movie jumps into the present, you quickly become stuck in a mysterious fantasy. Caulder spends a lot of time explaining the various systems and rules of magic to support the various characters, but it mostly feels like fiobbledygook and rarely adds useful information. “Max is a 14th-level wizard” is an actual line of dialogue in the movie, but there’s no one there to help the audience know something they need to understand; There is no other reference to the Warlock leveling system or what level 14 versus level 5 or level 42 means.

He also acknowledges how heavily this type of writing relies on mystical technobabble. After a singularly impenetrable interaction with another magical figure who has a “mulder spell,” Caulder’s assistant, 37th Dolan, who, as yet another superfluous word, is just a word for a phantom sidekick—he nonchalantly asks, “I mean everything. Got the point.” At least someone is asking the question.

They often seem more interested in exploring and explaining the world they’ve created than what we’ve come to see in some real witch hunt. The film opens when Caulder’s former assistant, 36th Dolan (Michael Caine, who is too good for the part), is killed. Kaulder, the immortal warrior, must blaze a trail of bloody vengeance; Indeed, it becomes a mystery of sorts, with Caulder rushing to New York for magical clues as a magical detective.

Only in the last act does Caulder set the saga of being hunted by a sword like the famous sword, the Witchslayer, by pulling it from his armory (infuriated in the first act, but otherwise awkwardly unused). And this is done in just a few minutes. Granted, it’s not the greatest scene when Kaulder finally uses the potion to light his sword and fights the witch queen in the dungeon. But this is the only moment in the film that really tries to deliver on the idea at its core.
