Although I have my favorite seasons and seasons, I consider myself a very open reader who likes to explore new worlds outside of my comfort zone. A world outside my comfort zone? Alaska in the 70’s When I was asked to participate in a blog tour I couldn’t say yes! Fast enough!

The Smell Of Other Peoples Houses

The Smell of Another Man’s House tells the story of four teenagers who couldn’t be more different: chasing Ruth one night and sending her away; Dora fears that she will always be locked in her house, even after a lucky break; Alice loves her father, but dancing means the world to her and helping out on a fishing boat for the summer means giving up an experiment that could change her world; Hank and his brother run away from home and manage to escape on a boat…

These Elaborate Gingerbread Creations Prove That Baking Is An Art

For such a short whisper of a story (less than 250 pages!) this book sure packs a punch and Hitchcock isn’t afraid to discuss topics! Pregnancy, abuse, romance, religion, class differences, racism – it’s all on display here and I have to say I’m amazed at how well they’ve pulled the story together . The book never felt like a post-study special, not once did I feel like I bit off more than I could chew, so bravo for that!

The Smell Of Other Peoples Houses

If I had a problem it was that, at times, the transitions between characters were abrupt and confusing. I wonder if the story would have benefited from an extra hundred pages or if the story could have been less..? I tend to go with the ‘more, the merrier’ approach to character POVs, but I didn’t really connect here. There was not enough room to feed these teenagers and give me the insight I so desperately needed. I knew there was more to Alice than a beautiful girl who dreamed of dancing. Don’t think for a second that there wasn’t a whole world of emotion and pain locked away in Dora’s mind waiting to be discovered!

I think when the worst thing you can say about a story is that you didn’t do your job as a writer (and that’s your first one too!) the smell of someone else’s room doesn’t necessarily make it a story. always historical and easily accessible. to be read now, but what is within its pages is the beginning of what is to come for Hitchcock. A serious subject is handled with deep talent without being sugary or gimmicky, this is a story that will resonate with readers. Although I would like to see more in depth, I recommend it and look forward to seeing what Hitchcock does next! Set in Alaska in the 70’s, we meet four young men, each with their own predicament, whose lives are about to unravel.

The Smell Of Other Peoples Houses // Bonnie Sue Hitchcock

I really like this book. I’ve had it on my shelf for a while and I’m glad I finally got around to reading it.

I really like the Alaska setting in this book. You get a good sense of place and time and really feel the changing of the seasons throughout the story. I enjoyed reading about the characters, although I liked reading about some more than others, and I really liked how the story slowly reveals their relationship and brings them all together in the end.

The Smell Of Other Peoples Houses

I had a rocky time at first. I had a hard time sharing some of the characters and I felt like every time I put the story down I was taking away from the story. When I feel like everything is fine and I’m enjoying myself, the book ends, which is a bit of a shame. Wish it was longer.

How To Navigate Open Houses In Southern California

I really like the premise of this book and the issues it raises, but I’m left feeling that it’s all too thin. It’s one of my favorite books now, but in a year, I’ll probably forget all but the parts about Alaska. The Smell Of Other Peoples Houses

Juvenile fiction, as we know it, is filled with teenagers suffering from broken families, struggling to emerge from the chrysalises and reach the butterfly stage. But in this perfect debut, Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock distinguishes herself by setting her coming-of-age story against the backdrop of 1970s Alaska, the coming-of-age after her 1959 coronation. .

The smell of someone else’s house alternates between first-person narratives about four teenagers: Ruth who lives with her grandmother and her strict younger sister; Dora who sleeps at her friend’s house to avoid her parents; Alice struggles to escape the confines of the city; And Hank, running away from the darkness with his two younger brothers.

Signs Your House Is Haunted (and What To Do)

The layers of their four lives come together and weave together like hay in a basket, stripped from the ground up with the subtleties of their relationship. There are many types of people gathered in this thin story, but the place dominates.

The landscape of Alaska is very exposed; The book is organized into four seasons with very different climates, extensive fishing grounds and descriptions of areas bound by the laws of nature rather than man-made. Smell is key to history – from the smell of a changing mother in the house, from the smell of deer blood, to the smell of fish caught in the Yukon, to the smell of other people’s goods in a charity shop.

The Smell Of Other Peoples Houses

The book is heartbreaking and touching, as the teenager faces the hardships of living a poor life in a difficult world. All the players show courage and perseverance in the face of many sufferings.

Musty Smells In The House

While Hitchcock explores the book’s larger themes, such as pregnancy and domestic abuse, he captures these features with his lyrical prose, his masterful turns of phrase. His training as a journalist empowers through stories; The note is short and strong: “He smiles like a string of memories and he licks it, and slowly enjoys it.”

The Smell Of Other Peoples Houses

Hitchcock goes through the plot, but the author’s skill lies in the voices of the teenagers. They are very sincere, with a self-deprecating mind and generally show a gentleness, even if they have to break through the barriers they have built and overcome their own pain.
