This is a well written children’s book. It is perfectly written for those new to chapter reading. The text is so easy to read and understand that even beginners will benefit from it. The illustrations are very beautiful and bright. I realize there are already countless books by Dr. King it is easily accessible, but I think this book has a lot to offer young readers. I love that this book has “Think Tank” questions, it’s so important to get kids to not only read but also think critically and have an open discussion. The book also contains a table of contents, headings and a glossary that make the book ideal for use at home and in the classroom. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley for an honest review.

The Story Of Martin Luther King Jr

This fascinating, well-paced biography for young readers shares details about MLK’s childhood, teenage years, career, and his role in the struggle for diversity. The book has a glossary at the back of unfamiliar words and has many interesting features such as a timeline, open-ended questions and counterfactuals. The conclusion summarizes MLK’s accomplishments and encourages children to think about how they can inspire them. I found this book to be very well written and one that both children and adults can learn from. The author does an excellent job of placing the events of his life in historical context and emphasizes MLK’s Christian faith in an accurate and respectful way. However, as great as this book is, I have one major criticism. Summarizing the Civil War is oversimplified to the point of error. The description of the Civil War says, “The North wanted to end slavery and fight the South,” which is logical, but false. Abraham Lincoln wanted to end slavery, but the war was in response to southern states leaving the Union after Lincoln became president. Although Lincoln had long-term and ambitious military goals, the Northern War against the Confederacy was primarily about protecting the Union. Some states in the North still allowed slavery, and some Union officials owned slaves. To say that the North fought the Civil War to end slavery is an understatement. It can upset the black kids to learn the truth later, and when the white kids realize how their elders misled them, they will find the right story to protest or be in danger from the Lost Cause stories. It is ineffective and potentially harmful to rub the north so deeply. I would recommend adults read more about the Civil War, but this is a great book for younger readers regardless. It handles difficult topics fairly and accurately without being too overwhelming for the more serious reader, and introduces famous civil rights figures in a well-organized, clear manner. From the Depths of Nicole’s Book Cellar- Book: The Martin Luther King Jr. Story: A Biography Book for New Readers (Story for: Biography Series for New Readers) Author: Christine Platt Genre: Biography, Children’s Fiction, Early Readers Standard : 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I would recommend this to early readers in grades 2-5. I would recommend reading it to those who cannot read themselves. I know what you’re thinking? Not another MLK, Jr. book. There are a lot of black people in power right? I agree there are many. However, this version of MLK, Jr. it included things that I don’t think other early reader books of this type have. It follows the king not only from birth to death, but also tells the story of the history that took place and followed his legacy. The imagery was really powerful and appropriate for the right age. One thing I liked about the book was the Think Tank questions. Imagine how powerful a lesson in class or a conversation with your student or child is when you can pause and ask them – “What can you do?” or “Why did that happen?” The book also included a timeline, glossary, headings, and a list of resources to help you study the text if you are a classroom teacher. Although this book is written for children, I enjoyed reading it and refreshing things I had forgotten. I recommend this book not only for elementary students, but also for parents to read it with their children.
