Thomas Jefferson Quotes

Thomas Jefferson Quotes – This Wednesday is Thomas Jefferson’s 273rd birthday. You may know him as the third president of our wonderful nation, the writer of the Declaration of Independence, and the inventor of the rocking chair. This founder was also America’s first wine connoisseur. In fact, we can thank him for creating a taste for good wine in this country. Today we are sharing some interesting facts related to his love of wine.

Jefferson arrived in Paris in 1785 and began his duties as the American minister to France. He soon embarked on a three-month official tour of southern France and northern Italy, visiting Bordeaux, Burgundy, the Rhône, and Piedmont. This trip opened his eyes to the nuances of wine, and ultimately shaped his taste buds as he became intimately familiar with the centuries-old tradition of growing each region’s unique wines.

Jefferson was one of the first to import fine wine into the states, but he did so cautiously, warning in a letter to a friend, “Don’t go to a middleman.” For shady brokers and thirsty sailors would help hold a cask of wine on their way across the Atlantic, filling it with water before they arrived. No one likes watery Burgundy, and Jefferson didn’t want to cheat himself, so after agreeing to buy directly from the producer, he would insist on bottling it to preserve it during shipping. Bottling wine was not a common practice at the time and added cost, but it helped keep the wine safe for years.

“We can make as many types of wine in the United States as we do in Europe, not exactly the same, but undoubtedly better.”

Most Americans drank very young wine and didn’t think much about aging it. Jefferson was surprised to learn how old some of the French wines he tasted were and how they improved over time. During a trip to Burgundy, he remarked that “Chambertin, Vaujou, and Veaune are the strongest,” which is still true today. Naturally, he began to acquire these quality wines suitable for aging. His favorites were Sauternes and Madeira, who held up the Declaration of Independence. He also preferred Hermitage, Rhône, Bordeaux, Burgundy and the Rhine.

Keeping taxes low made sense for large wine imports, but Jefferson also had higher goals. He said, “No nation is drunk where wine is cheap; The preciousness of wine replaces ardent spirits as common drinks.” In a way, he thought, people would rather get drunk on Bordeaux than cheap liquor.

On December 5, 1985, at Christie’s in London, the Forbes family paid $157,000 for the most expensive single bottle ever sold. Advertised as a rare bottle owned by Thomas Jefferson, the glass is engraved with the words “1787 Lafitte” and “Th.J.” The wine level was “exceptionally high” for such an old bottle – just half an inch below the cork – and the color was “exceptionally deep for its age”. The value of wine is said to be “priceless”. We know that Jefferson made several trips to Bordeaux, purchasing bottles from Château Lafite, Château d’Iquem, Haut-Brion, Branne-Mouton, and more. Unfortunately, radiological analysis confirmed that the bottle was fake.

Jefferson Philip Mazzei, an Italian defeatist, began planting vines in Monticello’s reservoir. However, the business was not successful. Most of the vines were destroyed by phylloxera, and then the revolution demanded most of his attention. They never made wine, but his dream lives on today at Jefferson Vineyards, near Mazzei’s former estate.

“Wine became indispensable to my health,” Jefferson said, and recounted many stories about wine’s great health effects. In a letter to his doctor in 1819, he celebrated the large pour, writing, “But I doubled the doctor’s glass and half the wine, and even trebled my friend’s.” Another letter clarified, “My measure is 3 or 4 glasses full with dinner.” However, he used to add a little water to his wine. However, he lived long enough to draw conclusions about the health effects of wine, and there are records of his family drinking around 400 bottles a year.

So raise a glass, pour some champagne, or just drink some good Vougeot to remember America’s first wine at altitude. Without his dedication to the cause, we might all be drinking Scappernong and singing Save the Queen.

Thomas Jefferson Quotes

I think we often think that because other people are just “lucky” they have more money, are more successful, or are somehow better than us. And to some extent that may be true (it’s mostly about who knows), but luck doesn’t have much to do with it.

He Who Permits Himself To Tell A Lie Once, Finds It Much Easier To Do It The Second Time.

The numbers we’re looking for have worked hard to get where they are, and as Jefferson said, the harder you work, the luckier you get. If you don’t put yourself out there, if you don’t work towards that goal, you’ll never be in the right place to shine that lucky star.
