I was happy when I opened Disney + (opens in a new tab) recently and found Turner & Hooch (opens in a new tab) just sitting there, waiting to be seen.

It’s okay if you don’t know the title. This movie came out more than 30 years ago, in 1989. It was a huge success at the box office, but it’s also exactly the kind of formulaic, schmaltzy buddy comedy that flies in the face of awards season.

Two reasons: Tom Hanks, and his canine companion. The cut “friend” of this funny friend is Beasley the dog. Beasley, a hulking, brown French mastiff, played Hooch in the film’s odd couple. This is a movie where Hanks’ character, a wonderful weirdo, learns to let go and love his dog’s life.
You are not here to be smart. Tom Hanks is here to create a comedy about a big and happy horse dog.
So it goes like this: Scott Turner (Hanks) is a bored detective with a low burden of sleep in a southern California home. He only had a few days to pack up and move on to a more interesting project when tragedy struck: A good old man who frequents Good Guy Turner is killed after witnessing a crime he shouldn’t have committed.

The only witness to the killing is the dead man’s dog. Dirty hookah and slobber-infused slobber is too big, loud, and unmanageable to have a lot of friends with. So when animal control can’t even get a handle on them, Turner steps in. He’s not a dog person and doesn’t know what to do with Hooch, but he’s a detective who knows he needs evidence of a murder.
So Hooch goes home with Turner and hilarity ensues. Remember, this was 1989. As for Hanks’ film,

Of The Saddest Fictional Dog Deaths
A scene from Turner driving a wild, out-of-control hooch home runs in slow motion as the dog, tied to a lead on a six-foot pole, walks alongside the car. Then several shows of Turner making the mistake of a new dog owner talking to Hooch like a person and laying down house rules as if he would understand.
There’s plenty of comedy to shout out and doom filled with slobber. Hooch is a lovely threat. He eagerly ate the headrest of the car seat and left the locked room. His arrival at Turner’s house is described as complete and utter confusion. The immaculate cleanliness that Turner had worked so hard to maintain was almost immediately destroyed by gallons of drool as Hooch liked to give it a good shake.
It’s ugly! The sound from the Hooch, the oil grime covering your body, and the unpleasant splats of saliva on Turner’s furniture are meant to make you cringe. Caring for dogs isn’t all furry and loving licks, and bringing Hooch home for Turner is a way to fall fast.

He also quickly realized what a gift dog really is. Hooch brings a lot of serious energy into Turner’s life, of course. But while the Turner we meet at the beginning of the film is a wonderful man, he clearly doesn’t live a very good life either. His love of cleanliness and order has affected his personal relationships. Turner is very personable and has kept her from making strong friendships and romantic relationships.
Hooch changed all that. The chaos he invited into Turner’s life was a blessing in disguise. The detective knows that love sometimes has to go wrong. The plot may be a little on the nose for the way the household works – Turner’s inevitable love interest is Katie (Mary McCusker), a local vet who leaves the house – but is it?
You are not here to be smart. Tom Hanks is here to create a comedy about a big and happy horse dog. During the early stages of his career, Hanks was an unforgettable star in any film he appeared in. You have a proverbial level. But facing Beasley, he clearly found his game.

Stands today as a heartfelt film about a man and a dog that takes an honest look at the impact a pet can have on our lives. For all the schmaltz and all the predictable plot twists and turns, you get a thoroughly entertaining two hours of a big, neglected dog teaching Tom Hanks how to love.
