Treatment For Thick Toe Nails – There are a few things you can count on: taxes, death, and nail fungus. You might get lucky and avoid two of them.
More than half of people over the age of 50 have fungal nails. It increases with each decade, with 60 percent of 60-year-olds and 70 percent of 70-year-olds having these thick, unsightly nails. Just throw in the towel when you reach 100.

Don’t be fooled though. This is not just a problem for the elderly. It doesn’t discriminate, and the longer you have it, the harder it is to attack. Early intervention can make a big difference in treatment.
Psoriasis In The Fingernails And Toenails
On average, people wait 3-5 years after noticing changes in their nails before seeing a doctor. Months later…
Thick nails can be painful, but they can also be embarrassing. If you want to wear sandals, go to the beach, or spend time together at your friend’s pool, it can also be a quality of life issue. It will only add to the problem if you hide your unsightly nails under socks, shoes and nail polish.
The thickness of the nail can be deep, 4-20 times thicker than a normal nail. The entire nail will be so dark that you won’t be able to see the pink layer of the nail. Loose residue will collect under the nail. The nail will loosen from the nail bed and may periodically fall off.

Changes in the shape of nails can be dramatic. The term “griphotic” nail means “ram’s horn” and the nail will grow in an upward spiral to resemble its name. The nail can also rotate 90 degrees away from the toe.
The affected nail will discolor 30-100 percent of the nail area and be 2-4 times the thickness of the nail. Cutting those nails requires stronger nippers. The separation of nail and bed can be up to 25 percent. If one nail has changed significantly, you may notice small changes in the other nail.
Pseudomonas Nail Infection [causes, Symptoms & Best Treatment]
Less than 20 percent of nails will be discolored. It will be slightly yellow, brown or gray (the color of a smoker’s nails). If a yeast infection is present on the nails, white spots or streaks will appear. It can also appear on the tip or side of the nail. The nail will have a normal thickness.
The main thing is to recognize changes in the nails in time. Changes associated with stage 3 can appear after 5-10 years, for stage 2 – after 1-5 years, and for stage 1 – after 1 year or less. Unfortunately, we rarely pay attention to our nails, so early changes are not noticed and ignored until stage 3.
Nail fungus is like a slow, smoldering fire. Easier to erase once it starts. When a house fire is raging, sometimes it can be pointless. Therefore, early detection is the most important success factor.

“The nails started changing 6 months ago.” (The nail actually started hurting 6 months ago, but has become discolored and thickened over the past 5-10 years.)
“5 years ago I got something on my nail and it fell off. He came back thick and ugly. I thought it would go away.’
“I tried EVERYTHING. Tea tree oil, Vaporub Vicky, vinegar… and nothing happened. I have been using this stuff for 6 months.” Medicines that have true antifungal properties will take 1 year to clear the nails.
The 7 Best Toenail Fungus Treatments Of 2023
The most successful treatment is a combination of oral and topical medications, nail nutrition, and cleaning.
Each individual treatment helps little by itself. Oral medications have a 50 percent cure rate for toenails, topical medications 5-10 percent, and nail nutrition falls below 2 percent. Nail exfoliation reduces the size and bulk of the nail, so there is less fungus to deal with, but it does not eliminate it.
If you put all these treatments together, we can see a 75 percent cure rate. The definition of “treatment” should be discussed.

Nails may look “better” after a year of treatment and even show an 80 percent improvement, but if the nail bed is not pink and thin, the fungus is still there. Success is when your toenails look as sharp and thin as your fingernails.
The drug for oral administration is used for 90 days, 1 tab. Consistency is critical. This type of medication can irritate the liver, so a blood test should be monitored before starting treatment and repeated after 45 days. (I want the results to be in the low normal range to consider this option.) This type of liver problem can also occur with cholesterol and oral diabetes medications. Adding certain drugs that affect the liver may not be a good idea. We don’t want you to have beautiful nails and a bad heart.
Warning: Do not take grapefruit juice while taking oral antifungal medications. It is metabolized in the same area of the liver as oral antifungals, cholesterol medications, and diabetes medications.
Treating The Root Cause Of Toenail Fungus
Topical medications are considered fungostatic, which means they don’t kill the fungus, but slow its growth or deterioration. The goal is for oral medications to kill the fungus, and topical medications to prevent it from growing. New nails will eventually replace old, discolored nails.
Recent research suggests that simply attacking the fungus may not be enough. Improving nail health is also very important. The new generation of topical preparations includes a number of products that restore nails.
Plus, there are new treatment options! Laser therapy helps with all of the above while fighting fungal nail infections. This is a very simple therapy – it only takes 6 sessions over 6 months.

If you have large and thick nails, you may need extra help – we recommend that you undergo 12 months of laser therapy.
Fungi are saprophytes, which means they thrive on dead, rotting tissue. A culture of the carpets in your home, car, or the last restaurant you ate at will reveal fungus. So you can blame it on public showers, bad kids’ bedrooms, a nail salon, or a fitness center, but fungus is everywhere.
Closed shoes collect sweat, never get cleaned and accumulate dead cells. (When was the last time you cleaned the inside of your shoes?) There are endless food sources for fungus and bacteria in shoes.

Denying that you have nail fungus will delay treatment, and delayed treatment is the nail in the coffin for good results.
Remember that nail discoloration may not be from nail polish. The usual first reaction is to see some, however, to hide the change with more polish. It’s always surprising that after masking nail discoloration for a few years, the nails only get worse.
This is a difficult question for orthopedists. They don’t want to call attention to the fungus in our midst because they will be blamed for causing the problem. If you don’t take care of your nails, you can be in the unknown happiness for years.

Also remember, the best way to get well is to give me a fighting chance to help you. Showing me a stage 3 nail and expecting to hear great news that everything will be back to normal in a few weeks is as frustrating for me as it is for the patient. You may have heard of this before, but start treatment early.
The point of return is awareness. People get stage 2 and 3 toenail fungus because they don’t know what’s going on with their feet and it’s just embarrassing.
Spread the word! If you, a friend, loved one, or anyone who uses the same bottle of nail polish at a foot spa experience what may be the beginning of nail problems, please contact my office. If it’s nail fungus, we can hit it hard and early. If not, that’s something to look into – it’s probably something else that needs treatment. All it takes is one episode of injury to the right (or rather, wrong) side of the toe, and you will be left with thick toenails (onychauxis) for life.
Fungal Toenail Cure And Treatment
Thick toenails (onychauxis) are common, especially with age. Years of general wear and tear that keep our nails too long, wearing the wrong shoes, stubbing and dropping things on our toes all cause gradual (and sometimes rapid) thickening. There are also diseases that thicken the nails, such as psoriasis and fungal infections. But you don’t have to be old or have a medical condition to get thick toenails. This article discusses ingrown toenails from an active lifestyle perspective, how it can contribute to blisters (of course), and what you can do about it.
