Using Big Words Doesnt Make You Sound Smart – NEW YORK – Complex vocabulary can make you look really smart to the people you’re talking to – but a new study finds that using too many big words can also be off-putting.
In a survey of more than 1,900 people commissioned by Preply, 56 percent thought people with complex vocabularies were highly skilled. Almost four in five (78%) added that using big words makes people appear smarter than they really are.

“Having a great vocabulary can be important in more ways than one. For example, it can make people want to listen because they respect your intelligence. On the other hand, it can allow you to reach more people. If you know the words that sports fans, police officers and computer technicians can use, you can effectively communicate with all three groups,” said Matt Zajehowski, Preply.

So what words can make you the “average Joe” in your social circle? The study found words like “special,” “recognition,” “briefly,” “anomaly” and “cherishing” on the list of words that make the speaker sound smart.

Interestingly, the study also revealed the words people use to make others seem smarter—as opposed to the words they hear others use about that smart person. Number one on that list is “light,” followed by “light” and “aesthetics.”

Being articulate won’t impress everyone you meet, as 43 percent of respondents believe that people who use complex language are trying to sound smarter than they really are. If you’re looking for a big word for it – it’s hypocrisy.
“Few people have the patience to read or listen to artificially complicated language. Maybe you’ve seen office memos that are written in such thick language that you don’t know what they mean. Even if you can get past them,” Zajehovski said.
Studies have also found that people with complex vocabularies may want to stick to simpler sentences when speaking on a date! While 63 percent say they’ve used foul language to impress a potential partner, 46 percent say it’s a dating deal breaker if someone uses too many big words.

Although many people believe that a rich vocabulary makes a person seem more intelligent, it can also make some trust the speaker more. One in four admits that they do not trust people who use big words in conversation. Whether you’re giving a great speech or writing the next great American story, success depends on using the right words. Even with these big words in your head, understanding how to use them can be confusing. You don’t want to confuse (or, worse, offend) your friends by using a word. Fortunately, reading some examples can clear things up for you.
When giving a speech or debate, using complex words can give more emotional resonance, increase the credibility of your point, or otherwise make your speech flow more smoothly. Make sure you know what the word means and how to pronounce it before you say it out loud.
