What Do You Use To Scent Candles – Who doesn’t love candles? These homemade aromatherapy candles are the perfect relaxation gift and a great use for all those old mason jars. All you need is wax, wick and essential oil. This is the truth! Essential oils help you make scented candles at home, which means you can customize them yourself!
Almost the first thing anyone comments on when they walk into our apartment is our extravagant collection of candles. Thirty and I collect candles and spend an inordinate amount of money on candles every month. Seeing us at West Elm is like seeing a kid in a candy store. I won’t tell you how much we spent on candles last month because it would actually make me cry…but we can’t resist!
What Do You Use To Scent Candles
In an effort to keep my budget under control, I’ve been trying to make candles every few months to cover our expenses. It’s crazy how much you can save once you invest in basic ingredients (just wax chips, essential oils and wicks). Although, if I’m being completely honest, candles are one of the things I allow myself to enjoy because the process of making candles at home isn’t always easy!
Amazon Has A Hidden Section Of Scented Candles For The Holidays
I don’t know if there’s a secret trick to making candles that I haven’t discovered yet, but for some reason, every time I make them something horribly wrong happens. It’s usually my fault because I know I rush the process or skip steps, but in the end they always have a way of working, which is why I keep doing them.
Today I’m sharing my top tips for making aromatherapy candles at home (or essential oils because that’s pretty much it!) as well as ways to avoid making the same mistakes I make every time.
In terms of ingredients, these scented candles are relatively easy to make. All you need are soy wax flakes and essential oils (plus your tools). Why Soy Wax? Candles made from soy wax burn cleanly and release some soot as the candle burns. They are non-toxic, so they do not release toxins when burned.
Six Benefits Of Burning Candles In Your Home
Soy wax melts fairly quickly and is easy to handle, although you’ll want to use some kind of disposable stirrer because it sticks to everything and is hard to remove once it hardens. I use a wooden chopstick that I can throw away when I’m done with the candle making process.
Aromatherapy candles are effectively essential oil candles. If you’re curious to learn more about aromatherapy, check out this post on Essential Oils 101. You should add 80 to 120 drops of essential oil to it. Yes, that sounds like a lot, but it’s split between 4 candles. The amount depends on which essential oil you choose. Again, see this post for more information on the benefits of different essential oils. Feel free to mix and match! Add the oils directly to the melted soy wax.
Cut your wicks so they are longer than the vertical height of your glass. After hardening, you can lower them.
Ways To Make Scented Candles
Secure your wicks with “anchors” by putting some wax on the bottom of your empty jar and then press it down using a chopstick.
Use a chopstick (a pen will also work) and place it horizontally across the top of the glass. Attach your wick to it so it’s vertical and make sure it’s perfectly flat. If it’s not straight, everything smells like burning.
Pour your wax directly into the jar until it fills below the lip and surrounds the wick. Always keep your candles in your jars with newspaper. Otherwise you will have wax everywhere. And cleaning wax off the stove is no fun (trust me!).
All Natural Organic And Non Toxic Candles
Very important: do not pour the remaining wax down the drain <– this was not a fun lesson to learn
You can leave your candles in a cool place and they will last for about an hour. Cut them before the wicks burn.

The Scented Candles To Burn During A Dinner Party
This year, we thought we’d switch it up with quality beeswax candles and holiday-scented essential oils from one of our favorite natural companies, Plant Therapy.
Before we dive in, I need to tell you why I hate regular scented candles. Don’t get me wrong, I do
Burning candles – that ambiance is hard to beat this time of year – and is sure to add a nice scent to the room while you’re enjoying it.
What Herbs Are Best For Candles: Common Plants And Herbs For Candle Making
But, breathing in those synthetic fragrances—not to mention the paraffin wax they’re often made from—can be toxic! Some say it’s as bad for you as secondhand smoke or the fumes from your car.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, along with researchers at the University of Michigan and South Carolina State, certain types of candles are known to emit dangerous chemicals such as benzene and ketones. Although there are no definitive studies to determine the long-term effects of candle exposure, Arizona allergist Dr. Stuart Agren says that some candles, especially strongly scented candles, emit chemicals similar to car exhaust fumes.
Of course, the National Candle Association (yes, there is such a thing) denies these claims, but I’ve learned enough from my research on processed foods to steer clear of anything synthetic or artificial. Just because something is “approved” for use doesn’t mean it’s not bad for you – just look at what happened to this approved synthetic product. Synthetic is defined as “something made by chemical synthesis specifically to imitate a natural product.” In other words, it’s fake, fake, fake! And we all know we love the real thing here. 🙂
Make Your Own Beeswax Candles!
Artificial and synthetic ingredients are the #1 additive I try to avoid in my diet, and naturally (LOL) this extends to other products in my life. So, instead of letting questionable fumes waft into my house when I burn a candle, we thought we’d make (and share) our own natural candles with beeswax and essential oils!
Fortunately, not wanting artificial fragrance in our candles doesn’t mean we have to go the unscented route. Essential oils have been around for centuries, and we think the fun holiday scents from one of our favorite essential oil companies, Plant Therapy, are perfect for that. This plan.
Essential oils are concentrated, volatile and aromatic liquids obtained from fruits, seeds, flowers, bark, stems, roots, leaves or other parts of plants. Herbal Therapy offers only 100% pure essential oils and is one of the few companies to offer USDA certified organic options. All their oils go through several stages of testing and are always free of additives, adulterants and diluents to maintain the highest quality. You can certainly find many essential oil options out there, just know that not all are created equal. Finding a quality product is essential, which is why we choose herbal treatments!
