Virginia says, “Legend holds that black ravens were housed in the Tower of London to protect the monarchy. My piece presents a rare white raven to the Tower and questions what that means for the monarchy and the Tower.” By Mike Yip Inspired by photographs of white crows taken on Vancouver Island, Virginia used machine appliqué and machine quilting to create this striking piece. We really appreciated the intricate detail in the bird’s feathers, especially the structure of the tower in the background.

“During a spring safari in Botswana, Africa, I photographed a colorful bird that inspired this quilt,” writes Barbara. The bird is a lavender-breasted roller, highlighted against a pale blue background. Barbara’s combination of digital imagery and quilting has done an excellent job of conveying the stunning colors of this exotic bird.
Barbara notes that her techniques include photo transfers, silk dyes, machine appliqués and quilting. Each part of the bird has been finely stitched in a different color to match the image below.
Margery says of her original art quilts: “I love looking at the animals’ faces up close, the rapt expression makes you feel like you’re actually face to face with these amazing eagles.” Margery’s technique involves using jacquard textile acrylic paint Hand painting, machine thread painting and quilting on cotton fabrics. We were impressed by the fierce, striking expression Margery captured on Garuda’s regal face.

David Taylor’s Applique Quilt was inspired by a photograph of Steve Byland. David notes, “Birds have always been my favorite subject for quilts. I wish I had captured the attitude of the mother bird as she was horrified by the way her baby was behaving. I spent weeks arguing with myself Quilt color background, and ultimately faithful to Steve Byland’s photo.”
Winner of the Judges’ Choice Award from Carolee Hensley at the 2013 Houston International Quilt Festival, David’s materials include commercial cotton prints and purchased hand-dyed, painted fabrics. In addition to the bird details, we also appreciate the leafy texture in the background of this quilt. David will be teaching his technique at the Empty Spools workshop in March 2015.
Cherry won second place in the wall quilt category at the Pacific International Quilt Festival in 2013,” “I got into art quilting when I started learning about paints and other products to apply color to fabric. With no pattern to follow, I have the freedom to create fiber art, while building on a traditional quilted background, using my fiber anchors to expand the frame into personal expressive art. “

We love the realistic look of these adorable babies as they sit peacefully against a beautiful backdrop reminiscent of a Claude Monet impressionist painting. Cherry deftly creates her original pieces using ink painting, machine appliqué and free motion quilting. Added Angelina, Nate and other embellishments.
David won third place in Pattern Art Quilt at the 2013 Houston International Quilt Festival, “This is my second rooster quilt and this one is more flair. Finding the perfect hand-marbled fabric is the key to the feather… .that, and collected enough different red “textured” prints for its thorns.”
David’s original design was inspired by a photograph of Robert Churchill. It is made from commercial cotton, hand-dyed, painted fabrics, and a variety of purchased cotton threads. Wanda van den Abele is a freelance artist specializing in pencil drawings of birds. When she was a student, she was inspired by images of birds in library books. In fact, Wanda’s first art project completed at school is on display at her parents’ home.

Wandalin van den Abele is a self-employed artist working as a freelance artist specializing in pencil drawings of birds. He has been drawing birds since he was a child and continues to this day.
In her free time, Vandalyn enjoys spending time with family and friends. She also likes going to the beach and doing some sports.
Wanda was introduced to art at a very young age, when her father first taught her how to draw. While she enjoys being creative, it wasn’t until she completed her training as a metal restorer that she decided to pursue art full-time as an independent artist.
Gosling Tells All
Wanda started working as an independent artist after completing her training because she wanted more creative freedom than working for another company. That decision, she said, was also influenced by the fact that she wanted more control over the quality of her work and how much money she could make from it.
Besides birds, Wanda also paints other subjects such as cats and dogs, landscapes, cityscapes, and people walking down the street or sitting on a bench enjoying their surroundings.
It is unclear whether this artistic style is a critique of modern society and its obsession with material things, or a celebration of nature, but we can be sure that it will continue to be a paragon of excellence in the world. Art It’s hard to overstate the versatility of Vandaline during this period. It is clear that she has mastered her craft to a level that meets or exceeds the standard of competence expected of an independent artist.

Vandalyn’s story truly demonstrates the value of creative learning and the importance of having backup options. Like her, many others have found that combining their hobby (or one of them) with part-time work or freelancing can help them gain a deeper understanding of their niche.
Vandalin’s art is 100% original; however, due to his profession, he is not always able to represent it. Her website allows her to showcase all of her work without any restrictions, and in doing so, allows it to be enjoyed by people all over the world. She faces competition from other artists, but her online portfolio helps her stand out.
