What Is Movember – Movember is an annual event that involves growing a mustache during the month of November to raise awareness about health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and suicide.
By encouraging m’s (known by the charity as ‘Mo Bros’) to get involved, Movember aims to increase early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment of cancer and ultimately reduce the number of preventable deaths. In addition to annual screenings, the Movember Foundation encourages people to learn about the incidence of cancer in the family and to choose a healthy lifestyle.
What Is Movember
Using the mustache as the movement’s driving symbol, Movember focuses on three key areas: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and health and suicide prevention.
Movember: Supporting Men’s Health Charities
Since its inception, the Movember Foundation has raised $837 million and funded more than 1,200 projects in more than 20 countries.
The Movember Foundation charity has run Movember events since 2004 to raise awareness and funds for public health issues such as prostate cancer and depression in Australia and New Zealand. In 2007, evts launched in Ireland, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, El Salvador, Spain, the United Kingdom, Israel, South Africa, Taiwan, and the United States.
Save Nightly News ran a story in 1999 about a group of young people in Adelaide, South Australia who coined the phrase “Movember” and came up with the idea of growing mustaches for charity during the month of November.
In the news report, members of the Adelaide-based “Movember Committee” described how they came up with the idea for Movember one night in a pub. The group started 80m from Adelaide and quickly became a national sensation. They also used to raise money for the RSPCA by selling t-shirts they called ‘Growing Whiskers for Whiskers’.
Movember: Changing The Face Of Men’s Health With Your Moustaches
In 2004, an independent group in Melbourne held an event where they grew 30 meters of mustaches for 30 days to raise awareness of prostate cancer and depression.
Adam Garone, Travis Garone, Luke Slattery and Justin (Jesse) Coughlin have inspired 26 other fryers to “bring back” the tradition of growing a mustache. A movement was born. The following year, around 500 people raised more than $40,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. At the time, it was the largest donation ever made to PCFA. The group later became the Movember Foundation charity. Three years after the launch of the Movember movement, the organization received official charity status in Australia.
In 2010, the charity launched The Moscars, an online user-submitted global video competition to help Movember participants demonstrate their involvement in the movement.
In 2012, head judge Stan Lee awarded the Moskar Award to South African comedy duo Derrick Watts and The Sunday Blues for their video for “The Movember Song”, a parody of Carly Rae Jeaps’ hit “Call Me Maybe”.

That is, the founders make money from charity, and if the founders also drive flash cars and pay themselves hefty salaries.
Movember Moves Men’s Health Into Spotlight
It was also reported tonight that the founders want to charge a $1 million license fee to use the license. The final amount has not been confirmed and cannot be clarified due to lack of financial statements.
At the time, an international auditing giant that audited Movember’s accounts made a direct donation of $285,000 to an organization focused on human health independent of Movember.
However, Movem Foundation refuted these claims and claimed that their fees were far below the expected level. According to the financial summary of the 2008 Australian Movember campaign, campaign costs (administration and fundraising) accounted for 8% of the total amount raised.
“Movember’s emphasis on screening, its non-evidence-based recommendations on screening frequency, and its failure to provide adequate supporting information are in unhelpful conflict with their physicians. Meanwhile, Amell’s disease, alcohol and The more pressing concerns of drug abuse, smoking. And obesity are almost silenced. Is this the best thing we can do for our health?”[26]
What Is Movember?
“Twitter results suggest that Movember Canada 2013 fell short of the campaign’s stated goal of starting a conversation about MHealth, and prostate and testicular cancer in particular.”[27]
“We found that Twitter users across the country focused mostly on the social aspects of the Movember campaign, with relatively few tweets focusing on the health aspects of Movember. Additionally, those addressing health issues Users often use general statements instead of focusing on both. The specific health problems that Movember aims to address (cancer and MTL health). Surprisingly, the MTL health aspect of Movember is actually Not discussed.”[28] Partners [edit]
