Say Cheese Cheese
To make a “ch” sound, you naturally bring your teeth together, then a long “ee” sound separates your lips and your expression turns into a smile.
Ambassador Joseph E. Davis, an American lawyer and diplomat who served under Roosevelt, suggested this in 1943 during a photo shoot on the set of his book Mission to Moscow.
During the photo shoot, he said the formula for taking a good photo was to say “cheese” because it produced an automatic smile.
And he added: “I learned from a politician. A smart politician, a great politician. But of course I couldn’t say who he is.”

But taking a picture or smiling isn’t all there is to this delicious dairy product. So why do we use this phrase in the first place?
A local Texas newspaper published an article in 1943 referring to this phrase. Although no one knows for sure who invented it or why, many believe that it makes you laugh. The “ch” sound causes the teeth to clench, the long “ee” sound spreads the lips and thus makes the face smile. Here are some other examples of common phrases we use all the time.
Of course, we didn’t always get our pearly whites out for the camera. In the 19th century, only children, peasants and drunkards smiled in photographs; Everyone else had a neutral look, which was considered attractive and dignified at the time.

However, this is not the only reason why people smile in photos. First, it took several hours (or days!) for the cameras to capture the image. As you can imagine, it’s hard to hold still for that long, let alone hold back a smile. Plus, dental hygiene wasn’t a priority back in the day, and most people didn’t want to show off a mouth full of missing or broken teeth. Check out these ten tricks to look better in your photos.
Pictures were also expensive, meaning that the average person would only sit on one or two pictures in their lifetime. Because it was such an important event, everyone was on their best behavior – hence the awkward expressions.
Whatever the original reason for these heavy photos, the trend didn’t last long. The invention of the $1 Kodak camera in the 1900s, along with the growth of the Hollywood film industry, allowed more and more “everyday” moments to be captured on film. Thus, smiling became the norm in photos and so did the word “cheese”. Now that you know why we do it, learn about 30 more things you’ve always wondered about.
