May Basket Making – If there’s one thing you know about us at Buckle Youth, it’s that we’re all about fun. So, we decided to take the old May Day basket tradition and update it with a fun and easy way that anyone can get into. All you need is a few tools and a little creativity.
We chose to doodle with a simple spring and summer theme. But feel free to have your own theme too, whether it’s an animal theme, your favorite sports team or an inspirational quote. As for the paper size, we used 12″ x 12″ for the large cone, but you can cut a piece of regular printer paper into 8″ x 8″ squares for the smaller baskets.

Start by bringing the two opposite corners together in the center and roll the bottom half tighter, leaving the top half open. We used duct tape, but feel free to use whatever you have on hand, and more importantly, whatever will keep your cone intact.

Secure your ribbon with a double knot on the inside of the cone so it doesn’t unravel when hanging. You may need more knots, or you can fasten the ribbon on itself. You can use any ribbon you have at home. Or if you’re a planner, choose one that matches the theme of your cone!
Probably the easiest part. Take your donut holes and bag them with sticks or straws. Be careful to only go half way, not to the end!
It might be best to do it hanging so you can see how it looks later when you put it on the door. If your cone is too deep, take some paper towels to fill the bottom of the cone and push the filling to the front.

I especially loved wearing white, dancing and pole-twisting. Unfortunately, I don’t think kids today experience any of these fun activities. I just learned about another spring tradition yesterday – making baskets, filling them with fresh spring flowers or candy, and dropping them anonymously at a neighbor’s house at a spring party.
I love the idea of ​​making baskets, filling them with flowers, fresh or not, and giving them to friends and loved ones to spread the joy of spring.
To that end, I have an adorable simple basket to make – one that can involve kids or adults to help them make their own May Day basket using foam sheets, poster board, hot glue or super glue and Scissors knit. Right now, I’m obsessed with using foam sheets.
Practical Basket Making By George Wharton James (1920, Hardcover)
1. Cut a 4″ tall x 3 1/2″ wide poster board template with oval edges 1 1/2″ tall on center, as pictured. In addition to the poster board template, cut out:
3. Glue on 9 strips starting at the fold of the flap on the right, then one on the opposite left, front, bottom center.
6. Pull the fold up and start weaving each strip until it reaches the end, gathering the strip back (see image #11).

7. Continue weaving the strips, alternating each weave up and down until all the strips are woven and attached to the back.
8. Flatten the woven strips by pulling the vertical strips and pressing the horizontal strips together. Once flattened, glue the top strips together in place.
15. Wrap and glue a 1/4″ wide strip over the 1/2″ wide strip for the handle and top inside the basket.
May Day Baskets With Vanilla Mint Drop Chip Cookies
A May Day basket tradition is so sweet and easy to make and give! What a wonderful way to celebrate the arrival of spring and spread joy with loved ones and friends! May Day is one of my favorite traditions! Delivering flowers to the doorknob of a friend is very enjoyable! I recently created five different examples of May Day baskets that can be made with flowers from the grocery store. I shopped at Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods for all the flowers and look what beauty I found! Friends or family will be surprised and delighted to receive a May Day basket! This is a great tradition to keep alive!
All you need is a few simple things. I used a May Day basket with ribbon from the store. And I used: a wide-mouthed canning jar (but an empty peanut butter jar will work, too), water, mud, and some straw.
To make this basket, use: pink veronicas, ranunculus (in many shades of pink), pink hyacinths, pink tulips, and pink wax flowers.

To make this May Day basket, use: white ranunculus, white tulips, white wax flowers, white peonies, and willow.
This May Day basket was where spring broke it all! It has a little bit of everything and everything in abundance! To prepare this basket, use: flowering tree branches, daffodils, pink roses, pink tulips, white peonies, orange/yellow and blue delphiniums.
