In 1633, the Fairbanks family came to America from Halifax in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England. Before moving into the home built for Jonathan, Grace, and their six children, the family lived for several years in Watertown, Massachusetts. It is important to note that Jonathan did not build himself a house. Instead, he hired a master carpenter and a blacksmith, people who know what they are doing, to build him a house. This is a big part of why the house still exists today.

Dendrochronology, or tree-ring dating, in the summer log room shows that the tree from which it was felled was felled in 1637. the first parts of the house to be built. The dendrochronology of the small support post is dated 1641. Then they did not age the wood before using it; They build with green wood. From this information we know that the house was built between 1637 and 1641, and it is possible that parts of the house survived during the first year.

Eight generations of Fairbanks lived in the house; Everyone left their mark in one way or another. The extension doubled the size of the original house, adding two full wings, a workshop and some small additions. When the family became wealthy, luxury items such as wallpaper, paint, and larger windows were added to the home. However, around 1800 – 1820 times changed and the money disappeared. After this time no significant changes were made to the house. The house never had modern amenities such as heat, running water or electricity.

Abbott Lowell Cummings, former Charles F. Montgomery Professor of American Decorative Arts at Yale University, said the Fairbanks House is “one of the most important historic houses in the northeastern United States. Its local and national value lies not so much in its claim to be the oldest house in New England but in its architectural importance. It can easily be said that no other mid-17th century house in New England has survived in such incredible condition without damage. It is surprising that so early the building retains such a high level of original features. “It is a true treasure trove of information about the few surviving houses from this early period.”

As one of the original 13 colonies, it’s no surprise that Connecticut is home to one of the oldest homes in America. The Loomis Homestead is located in downtown Windsor, minutes from the state capital of Hartford. According to Lost New England, the house was built in 1640 and was one of the first houses ever built in the town and, appropriately, one of the first residents. Joseph Loomis left England in search of a better life two years before establishing his American settlement. He took his wife Mary and his eight children to the New World, where they were given about two acres of land.

Loomis did not choose the location of his new home by chance. He built his new house on a part of the land slightly higher than the others, making sure that rain did not flood his new house, but rather the surrounding vegetation. After the house passed into the hands of the Loomis family following his death in 1688, several additions were made. Additions and renovations continued until 1950 and included finishing the wood walls and removing the dilapidated porch. Other than that, most of the Loomis Homestead remains as it was when Loomis originally built it.

When Richard Sparrow, his wife Pandora, and his young son left England in 1633, they received six acres of land in New Plimoth, Massachusetts. However, there was a problem. In just a few years they had to build a house in this area. Sparrow House reports that Sparrow built a two-story house in 1636 near the river, making it easier for the family to collect water. However, that was only one of the advantages of the structure. Even by 17th century standards, the place was small. It was reduced after the Royals had two more children. Although the house stayed the same, Sparrow’s place grew. As the family patriarch gained more political positions, the family gained more tracts of land.

Finally, in 1653, it no longer made sense for the growing family to stay there and they left for Plymouth. Today, people can still visit the Richard Sparrow House, which retains its red wooden exterior at 42 Summer Street. It preserves the original leaded glass windows and the exposed cross beams that have kept the place intact for centuries.
