Cashmere is a type of wool that is made from cashmere goats and pashmina goats and is known for its very beautiful and white fibers. It is expensive due to the complex process of production and manufacture, which involves separating the fibers by hand from the wet goat’s wool.
The reason that the cost of cashmere varies so much between different brands is mainly because of the two different methods of collecting the wool: by bunching or spinning. Washing the goat coat produces less hair and therefore better quality cashmere. Splitting results in a stiffer coat and shorter fibers, and this produces a weaker cashmere that is not as soft as wetted wool. Also due to its shorter radius, it is more prone to increase the number of tigers.
In light of all that, and considering the quality of the craftsmanship and the working conditions of the factory where the garment is made, the cost of a cashmere sweater can range from $50 to over $50. $500.

Lately I’ve been getting tons of questions about Quince cashmere and how it compares to higher end luxury brands like Jenni Kayne.
If you’re not familiar with these brands, Quince is a company on a mission to provide quality core products at radically low prices using a factory-centric model that cuts out the middlemen in the supply chain. Jenni Kayne is a luxury California lifestyle brand known for timeless basics in luxurious fabrics with a focus on simplicity and attention to detail. Both brands are transparent about where they source their textiles and strive to support sustainable and ethical business practices.
I have the Jenni Kayne Cashmere Fisherman Sweater in ivory from last year, and I love it so much that I ordered the gray one when it had an early Black Friday sale. Quality, fit and attention to detail are good; but it also comes with a hefty price tag: $395.
Since Quince also has a cashmere fishnet sweater for $89, I decided to order it in both colors to match the Jenni Kayne.

At first glance, the similarities in these two shirts are striking. As for the knit, both are very soft and have the same density, but the texture is a bit more fuzzy when you feel it with your hand. You only really notice this when you put them next to each other.
The corner also has a thicker, thicker ‘thickness’, while Jenni Kayne’s is a little more understated and refined. These are small details, but they make a difference. I much prefer Jenni Kayne’s neck.
However, the color differences are interesting. The difference with gray sweaters is subtle, but with ivory shirts the difference is more pronounced. Jenni Kayne is a much nicer winter white, while Quince has a yellow undertone, as you can see here.
The biggest difference, however, is in the fit. The Jenni Kayne fits me perfectly in the small, but the Quince is a little shorter in the small and feels a little tight. However, it still fits the hands, arms and body.
Review: I Tried Quince’s Famous $50 Cashmere
Knowing from experience that Quince can be a bit small, I ordered the gray corner in the middle. Jenni Kayne is a little gray.
The corner in the middle is slightly longer than the petite Jenni Kayne – almost too long for me. The sleeves are also quite long, so I think the Quince medium is a bit too big for me overall, but I think the small looks small. Jenni Kayne fits true to size small.
Given the price difference, Quince seems like a better value overall, although the concept of value is really a very personal thing.
When it comes to ivory dresses, I definitely prefer Jenni Kayne, both for fit and color. But when it comes to gray, it’s a tougher decision. I could replace the Quince medium with a small one and pay attention to the slight differences in the fit, but I don’t like that thicker neck either, so I’m leaning towards getting the Jenni Kayne. I know I will wear it a lot, and the cost per wear will be gone.

That said, I have no reservations about Quince’s proposal. It’s a solid choice overall and a great value for the price.
This time we’re pairing the Vince Weekend Cashmere V-Neck Sweater ($325) with the Nordstrom Essential V-Neck Sweater that normally costs $149 but is currently on sale for $109.90.
Vince is a brand known for its high quality accessories, and among other things, it’s one of my favorite brands for cashmere clothing with luxury labels!
The Vince Weekend V-Neck is one of the staples in their line and has been around for years. I bought my gray for about 60% off in that big spring 2020 sale, and I added black to my closet in an end-of-season sale last spring.

The Nordstrom Cashmere Essential V-Neck used to go under the Halogen label, and as far as I can tell it’s the same sweater. They also have a classic crew neck and a turtleneck, and I’ve had several of each in different colors over the years.
The difference in quality and fit between these two sweaters is very obvious, I think in the pictures below. Both are fairly soft, but the Vince is thicker and has a thinner, and the cut is generally more generous. It has a much more luxurious look and feel. And remember mine is in its third year and still going strong. I wear it often, and it doesn’t really have any pilling.
On the other hand, the Nordstrom Essential V-Neck is so thin it’s practically invisible. I’ve had quite a few blog posts over the years, and I usually skip them at the end of the season because they start to seem tired and boring.
That said, both jerseys feel great, have a classic feel and come in a variety of colors. It’s a matter of how much you value Vince’s superior quality and fit, and whether or not Nordstrom’s surface finish bothers you.
This Affordable Cashmere Sweater Now Comes In 15 Colors
If you want longevity and durability, the cost of any Vince suit (especially if you can get one on sale, which is how I bought mine) is worth the wait. But if you want something right away that you can enjoy this season, Nordstrom’s version retails for $109.90. This is difficult!
In fact, Quince’s funny neck might just beat it. It costs $50, and if it’s anything like the cashmere fisherman dress, it’s a top contender in this category. I wish I had ordered one to try for this post, but I tried their cashmere sweater for last year’s cashmere sweater reviews.
The knit isn’t as soft and fluffy as some, but has a classic fit and comes in a variety of colors. There isn’t much extra room in the body or lengthwise, so I recommend sizing up if you want a more comfortable fit.
And in this category, another solid option is the $75 Naadam The Essential Cashmere Sweater. I have owned several Naadam cashmere pieces over the years and have always been very satisfied. They make a mix of cheaper and more expensive pieces, and even their cheaper pieces are nicer than most in the same price range, but their more expensive jewelry is in a class of its own. So thick and luxurious and soft. Luckily my favorites were still in stock.

This $75 base coat is a really nice base and probably the best bang for your buck in the cashmere range under $100.
This sweater is a lot tighter and softer than the Quince, and has a little more room in the body and shoulders, but it’s still a classic cut. I also like this shade of oyster better than the corner. It is also available in many colors. For $75 it’s pretty good
